Every once in a while I see a client who has an invention and, prior to seeing a patent lawyer or patent agent, has contacted an invention promotion firm. These firms advertise on television and the Internet, and offer services in relation to both patenting and marketing inventions.
Over the last few years such invention-development firms have received criticism from the U.S. federal government and from various trade groups for allegedly misleading consumers.
Yesterday, the Daily New published an article on this very topic. The inventor quoted in the article was satisfied with the services he received, but the article also notes that a number of official complaints have been published on the USPTO’s website.
The Canadian patent office has no such complaints website and little, if any, information on invention promotion firms is available at CIPO. The USPTO, however, has a good publication on this very topic - tittled Invention Promotion Firms
