Captain Copyright Responds
An email from Captain Copyright this morning informed me that Access Copyright has posted a response to the various criticisms it has received about the Captain Copyright website (on Access Copyright’s main website).
In the response, Access Copyright states that it takes all of the feedback and comments (whether positive or negative) seriously, that it has given very careful consideration to the criticisms received so far and, perhaps most interestingly, that it invited various organizations with differing perspectives on copyright issues to participate in the process of re-working and re-launching the Captain Copyright website.
According to Access Copyright’s response, the Canadian Library Association was invited to participate in this re-working of the site, but had declined. Somewhat strange that the CLA would decline such an opportunity, especially considering that in their recent Open Letter to Access Copyright (see my previous post) the CLA insisted that “…Access Copyright withdraw the site until the broader copyright community can assist Access Copyright in implementing an unbiased and balanced presentation of the rights of creators, rights-holders and users.”
Access Copyright notes that it has repeated its invitation to the CLA, to be part of the re-launching of Captain Copyright. So let us hope that the various sides on the Copyright Debate can get together and develop an informative website with a balanced perspective on Canadian Copyright issues.
Update (Aug. 15th):
Both Michael Geist and Howard Knopf now have detailed posts and comments about Captain Copyright’s response.
